A view of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak. Tshim Sha Tsui and Kowloon (mainland Hong Kong) are in the background across Victoria Harbour. The Peak is a must-visit for any Hong Kong traveler. It not only offers perhaps the best view of the city, but you can also have a romantic dinner at the restaurant, with the billion-dollar view as the backdrop. Reserve early to ensure a window seat!

An old Chinese story tells how the 8-year-old Emperor Ping of Song Dynasty came to visit Hong Kong. The emperor counted the peaks – homes to a dragon according to Chinese mythology –, and counted nine. A foolish lackey informed that there were only eight peaks. But a quick-witted advisor corrected the lackey by saying "of course the Emperor himself is the ninth dragon." Thus Kowloon ("Nine Peaks") was named. Perhaps apocryphal, but one should never let accuracy get in the way of a great story!

This shot captures just a small part of the 7 million people living in the tiny Island and nearby region. Again, Bank of China Tower and Central Plaza are visible near the right edge of the frame.
